Bethnal Green Gasholders

Planning - Historic Environment & Townscape

Marian Place, Bethnal Green, London

This project was worked on by Dr Timur Tatlioglu, a partner in our heritage and townscape team, working in partnership with our client and team.

Key information

Montagu Evans provided heritage advice on the redevelopment of this former gas site, which lies along the Regent’s Canal in north London. The two remaining gasholders are prominent features in the local area and lie within a conservation area.

Challenge

Marian Place is a constrained site with two gasholders that LB Tower Hamlets sought to retain. The challenge was to advise St William on a complementary solution to securing the long-term future of the structures while also delivering a high-quality residential-led development.

SOLUTION

Montagu Evans advised St William and RSHP through the pre-application process to ensure the industrial character and heritage of the site would be celebrated in the new development. We worked very closely with Historic England and LB.

RESULTS

The development will celebrate the industrial character of the site, delivering 555 new private and affordable homes, new jobs and 1.75 acres of public open space – all of which will be framed by the Regent’s Canal and the refurbished gasholder frames. The scheme comprises five faceted buildings ranging from 6-13 storeys, delivering a new sustainable community in a site that was historically associated with the storage of fossil fuel. Tower Hamlets on the design of the buildings that filled the gasholder frames, as well as a number of other tall buildings on the site.
