Key information
Montagu Evans provided heritage and townscape advice on the redevelopment and transformation of this former gas site, which includes the only group of seven listed gasholders worldwide.
The Bromley by Bow Gasholder site comprises a limited area for development due to the constraints associated with below-ground former gas apparatus and the seven Grade II listed gasholders. The challenge was to find a deliverable conversion solution that would secure the future of the gasholders while also delivering a quantum of development that would make the scheme commercially viable.
Montagu Evans worked closely with St William and Historic England to secure an Enhanced Listing Description of the gasholders to ensure there was a consistent and agreed-upon assessment of significance. Our specialism in gas heritage has then informed the redevelopment strategy and has involved two years of close and joint engagement with Historic England, the London Borough of Newham and the GLA.
Montagu Evans played a key role in preparing the hybrid applications for the phased redevelopment of the site. Our expertise in delivering highly complex sites with sensitive heritage assets has helped St William navigate the pre-application process.
